Photo Essay - Music Festival

On Saturday June 14th, I went to the Sund of Music Festival in Burlington with my friends Jenn and Sabrina and Mike. We went to go see IllScarlett and Silverstein, but when we got there IllScarlett seemed to be late, so Silverstein was up practising and doing sound checks.

Waiting for IllScarlett to get ready, and set everything up got a bit boring, so we decided to take random pictures of the people helping them out.

Finally, after waiting for about 2 hours, IllScarlett started playing.

As soon as they started playing, Jenn and I decided the lead singer and the drummer were very attractive.

Near the beginning it looked like it was going to rain, and did start to sprinkle for a second or two. Then they did a cover to the song "Walking on Sunshine".

I guess that song really worked, because soon afterwards, the sun started to shine, amking every one very hot. We knew that a sun burn was soon going to form.

After IllScarlett was finished playing Jenn and I wanted to go get a T-Shirt from them. By the time we got there, they were all sold out, so we got their CD instead.
Once we got our CD's, Sabrina and I both got a Silverstein T-Shirt. Then we all went to get somehting to eat.
After we all ate, we went back to see SIlverstein, but we got caught up in the back so we couldn't really see. Jenn had me on her back so I could take pictures.
The sun was in the way of my viewing so I couldn't really see where and what I was taking pictures of. Apparently, I can't estimate where things are, but atleast I was close.
All in all, the show was great, but unfortunatley it had to come to an end. After the show, we all went to Mapleveiew for a bit until we got picked up.
Our day at the Burington Sound of Music Festival was amazing and I can't wait to go again next year.

List the names of your family members, and indicate which is their favourite media tool.
Me- Cell Phone / Computer.

Mom – Tv / Computer.

Which is the least favourite? why?
Telephone, because no one in my household really needs to call anyone unless we really need something.

Do children of different ages or sexes prefer different items? why?
Yes, because boys would rather play video games, or computer games, when girls would rather talk on the phone and cell phone. Also, the younger usually go on the computer and the older usually like to watch the TV.

When is Photo Manipulation Too Much?

Almost all the photos in the magazines are manipulated to help the celebrities not look bad, fat, or anything like that, and we all know that. Yet every time someone sees a picture in the magazine they all want to look like that, they all want to know how they look like that.

However, in O.J Simpson's case, the photo was manipulated to make him seem angry, mean, and like a murderer. In the magazines Newsweek and Time, the same picture of O.J was shown, except in the Newsweek magazine, it was the actual mug shot that was originally taken, when the Time magazine has the mug shot that was manipulated to make him look more of a murderer and to make him seem guilty because he looks so much meaner. The Time magazine has the title of “An American Tragedy”, it is almost saying that the day he is found not guilty will be the worst day ever for Americans.

Though I do not agree with manipulation photographs, especially when it comes to making some one look uglier or fatter, but there really is nothing we can do about it, because they will say that they are not manipulating photo's but we will never know. Manipulating photo's also takes away the saying “A picture means a thousand words”, it is more like a million words, because of everything you can do to the picture these days.

Dixie Chicks Speak Their Mind!

“We are ashamed that the president of the United States of America is from Texas”, is the main statement that everyone will remember. They have gotten so much grief just for saying that small phrase, but did Pink get that much grief when she wrote her song? Did Kanye West get grief when he spoke out on national television? Why were the Dixie Chicks the only ones who got all the grief?

Nobody has the right to go ahead and say that they are the “dumbest bimbos” and that they are “foolish women who deserve to be slapped around”. What happened to freedom of speech? She did not hurt anyone from saying the things that she said.

How could something as small as that push people so over the edge that they would send threats and boycott their songs from the radio?

Why didn't Kanye West's statement get any attention to it? His was much more racial and offensive than Natalie's was. Natalie's statement was nothing compared to his, but Kanye's statement on how “George Bush doesn't care about black people”, how could that not effect the world but Natalie's statement does? What is so different about the two statements that made one get more attention than the other did?

Gwen Stefani and the Harajuku Girls

The Harajuku Girls are teenagers from Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan, or at least that is what Gwen Stefani want people to think. Really the four girls Maya Chino, Jennifer Kita, Rino Nakasone, and Mayuko Kitayama, or otherwise known as Love, Angel, Music, and Baby are from Tokyo, Los-Angeles California, Okinawa, and Osaka. The way Gwen Stefani shows the Harajuku Girls may also be the way she sees them as, and so what if she has altered them a little bit, it isn't hurting anyone. So there looks are different than the Harajuku Girl in Japan but they all do not dress the same. Some harajuku girls may dress gothic lolita, gothic maid, wamono, decora, second-hand fashion, and cyber fashion, so who knows, maybe Gwen's Harajuku Girls are dressing the way they would if they were actually from Harajuku, Japan.

The Harajuku Girls did not originate from Japan. They first were in England and then Japan adapted them in to their own culture, but do you hear anybody picking at them? Didn't think so. Though people may think that Gwen Stefani is torturing them she really isn't, in the one music video she is complimenting them, and they were the ones who signed the contract saying that they would act like 'dolls' so to speak, they knew that they were not going to be able to speak to the public.

Margaret Cho said. “I think it is totally acceptable to enjoy the Harajuku girls, because there are not that many other Asian people out there in the media really, so we have to take whatever we can get”. According to Seventeen Magazine issue May 2007, 84% of the people in the ads were Caucasian, and 0.5% were Asian, so that just goes to show we do not see many Asians in movies and hot TV shows now a days. Also, in the rationality assignment that we had a while back, where we had to watch TV shows and determine what races were shown in them and which weren't, there were not a whole lot of Asians, and again, the majority were Caucasian and Latino.

MiHi Ahn said, “Four Harajuku girls, or rather, Stefani's interpretation of Tokyo Street fashion in the Harajuku district”. Though I may not agree with what she MiHi Ahn said, many other people may think that she is just interpretation the Harajuku style.

Avril Lavigne: Plagiarized or Mistaken?

Personally, I do not believe that Avril Lavigne has plagiarized because does it not say that you are allowed to take 30 seconds or 10% which ever is less? She did not take neither 30 seconds or 10%, however, I can definitely see why some say she took the 'heart and soul' out of the other song done by the Rubinoos. I, myself have never heard of the song 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend' by the Rubinoos, but i can not say the same for other people. The main phrase that the majority of people know from Avril's song 'Girlfriend' is “hey hey you you, I don't like your girlfriend” which is the part that people say take the heart and soul out of the song 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend', by the Rubinoos, which is “hey hey you you, I wanna be your boyfriend”

Also, it states that whatever you take that is less than 30 seconds or 10%, you can not make anymore money than the original owner did, and Avril did make more money especially on that one main phrase which most people know, that also brought people to buy the C.D. Though the Ramones have a similar song to the Rubinoos, why would they not go after them for 'plagiarizing'? Why wouldn't they go after the Rolling Stones for their remake of the song? Both sound fairly similar, but why go after just Avril Lavigne? Is it because she got the most money out of the portion of the song that was taken, so they thought they would get more than the other two?

Finally, how would anyone really know for sure, if Avril has even ever heard of the Rubinoos song? I mean, the song came out way before she was around. Maybe she never heard it, but who really knows? Unless someone actually went up to her and asked her. What if it was just a coincidence? Then there would have been absolutely no point in going after her if she did nothing, right?
